[rm2k3] Dealing with lag

Forcing Lag:
You could manually remove one stick of ram from your computer.
Run multiple video windows.
Put a dvd on in the background and run Fraps at the same time.
Video capture the game while playing it.

Dealing with Lag
If your maps are larger than a single 20x15 view, you could use a parallel that only triggers on player movement to turn off any events that would be off screen.
Using pictures tends to lag more than just about anything else, and having a good graphics card isn't always the answer.

My point and click game (using Powermode and 2k3) became unplayable in parts after I upgraded video cards. My old card handled 320x240 great, but the newer one didn't have that low of a gear. It was weird that I could fire up Pcsx2 (the emulator, whatever the initials are) and run games I couldn't get better than single digit frame rates out of before, but my low res R2k3 games ran like molasses in winter, uphill.

Endless wave of foes.

You just need to get a little tricky.

Set the monster's hp way higher than you need it for the fight, as in maximum. Use events to check when the monster's hp falls below a certain threshold. "Kill" the monster by swapping it for a monster that has no name and no graphic. Set its health to whatever the maximum for that monster is. It isn't perfect, because it can still be targeted.

Once the whole first round of monsters (up to 8) have been "killed" (body swapped), run an event that swaps in the monsters you want in the second wave.

@Killer Wolf- I always like the look of your stuff man, never disappoints.
Would that be more of a tactics game? Just judging how the layout looks.

I'm doing some testing to see if a hybrid Roguelike is feasible in any of the makers I'm comfortable with (besides Q-Basic, which would have been the obvious choice a few years back).

EDIT - Top of the page and I don't have anything new!

Here are some old screens-

RMN Battledome! Round Three! This is closed.

I have some time set aside later this week to finish my entries up, so I will beat the deadline, just not by all that much.

I'm considering a different genre/approach for the western that would focus more on gameplay than aesthetics...

What are you thinking about right now?

My problem with D&D/d20 PnP rpgs in general is that even though they seem interesting when I read the rule books, the only people I know locally who are into that sort of thing are not the sort of people I'm comfortable being around for any extended period of time.

I remember when one of the bassists who briefly joined my band, before I decided "the hell with it" and took over bass duty myself, tried to convince me to come over and watch a game session to see if I'd like to join the next cycle. Of course, there was a scheduling conflict, because Mondays and Wednesdays were the nights he ran miniature Magic the Gathering tournaments...

Yeah, not so much.

[Request] FFVI Trance-styled/FFVII Vincent Limit Break-styled Command [2k3]

I'm not sure about the whole "it skips common event calls that it can't process in the battle event thing" since I'm pretty sure that one of my dbs mods alters stats in real time. In fact, most of what I use common events for are things that the battle event can't track, such as if hero has "x" status, and the like.

I know Powermode tends to cause a conflict with common events called from battle, particularly around the subject if input processing, but I haven't noticed many other problems with the function, and I've used it in a system that allowed the player to block enemy attacks with a timed button press.

As recommended above, I would use class tricks for this type of skill.

In regard to the mountain of battle eventing required, eventually you may hit the point of diminishing returns where it will just be simpler to make your own custom battle system.

ALSO - If you don't go the class change route, you need two variations of the event that calls in the EX character. If you have other active party members, you can freely subtract the normal version and replace it with the EX. If you use a three person max party, you would have one floating spot to use. You could load the EX version into the party and THEN remove the normal version, that way there would be no automatic game over.

I used something like that in an old cyberpunk game. The character could duplicate himself during "net based" combat, which just added in a duplicate version of him. If either the "real" character or the duplicate were killed (but not both), things went on as normal. As soon as battle ended, I checked to see which was alive, set the other one back to healthy status, adjusted their stats as required, and got rid of the other copy.

[Plug-in] [rm2k3] Animated Monsters Plugin

Nightowl - There are already ways to "fake" animated enemy skills and attacks, it just takes work.

Short version: Use battle events for targeting, set the enemy sprite to a transparent/blank one, run the desired animation through a battle event, restore the enemy sprite when you're done.

An example:

If you combined those tricks with the plugin's ability to display idle and injured frames, things would start looking downright good in a hurry.

Note-You can also split one animation up into multiple shorter animations and use their delay to test for timed button presses, as I did to allow the player to block the enemy attacks. This means that with a little planning, you can easily fake a Judgment Ring type setup right inside of the DBS!

Thanks for the kind words, and thank you to Chana for the link to that poem.

What are you thinking about right now?

My father told me that he never understood how much the time that he spent with his dad meant until I was the one spending time with him. It is a strange feeling to have, as a son, knowing that the person you aspired to be like/rebelled against (sometimes at the same exact time) is gone forever.

I can't remember how many times he tried to teach me how to tie different knots that he'd used over the years. He told me the story about how he'd impressed his boss at the circus when he tied a bowline to get a stubborn elephant moving, and how you just had to know your way around a rope if you were going out on a boat. Less than three weeks before he passed away, he gave it one last try.

I could never pay attention well enough to pick it up, it just wasn't important enough to me at the time, I guess. After he passed away, I had to find the length of rope he'd been using to try and teach me. I tried tying a couple that he showed me on that last day, and to my surprise I actually managed. All I could think was, why wasn't it important enough for me to try this hard before?

The practice rope has become like my rosary now. I spend a little time each day practicing the knots and hitches and figure eights. I can tie some of them with my eyes closed now, and I find myself re-making some of the little knot puzzles he made for me when I was a child.

He left one last puzzle for me. The practice line is actually two pieces, tied together with some combination knot that I can't even begin to identify. Sure, I could try untying it to see how it was done, but it feels like that would be cheating...also, I don't think I'm ready to be finished with it.

Each time I make an attempt at replicating it, if I start to come real close, I feel myself holding my breath and thinking, "Oh, no... is that it?" Thankfully, I haven't managed to duplicate it yet.

It has been exactly one week since he passed away. One week since he told me he just wanted to sit up for a while by himself. One week since he whistled for me to come back and help him. One week since he began to have trouble as I was assisting him back into the bed. One week since the man who got me interested in telling stories, making games, and even using computers, took his last breath. One week since I called 911. One week since I began cpr. One week since I failed to save him.

How is it even possible for one week to feel like both an eternity, and the blink of an eye at the same time?
